Paralegal Degree

Page history last edited by Criminaljusticedegrees 3 months, 3 weeks ago

You are thinking about getting a paralegal degree or a computer forensics degree because you have an interest in the law without all of the physical requirements and level of personal dangers that a job as a police officer or an FBI agent requires.  Maybe you just want a paralegal degree because you like working with lawyers and in court rooms.  Maybe you want a taste of a career in criminal justice before going to school to become a lawyer.

Maybe computers are your interest and you want to be able to catch criminals and solve crimes by taking apart someone's computer hard drive and finding something on it that will help solve a crime.  That's right.  Just because you delete something from your computer, it doesn't mean that it is completely gone.  A computer forensics specialist can retrieve anything that is left on the hard drive that a layperson cannot retrieve.

It was computer forensics that helped solve the infamous BTK serial murder case as well as other landmark cases such as the Sharon Lopatka murder.  Computer forensics teams found hundreds of emails in her computer that led law enforcement officials to finding her killer, Robert Glass.

If any of these exciting career ideas appeals to you, all you have to do is find the right criminal justice school to get your paralegal degree or computer forensics degree off to a solid start.  In most cases, you can get your degree right online from a criminal justice school that has online courses.

In the paralegal field, a paralegal works directly under a lawyer in the United States and cannot give legal advice nor are they officers of the court.  In fact, the American Bar Association defines a paralegal as “A legal assistant or paralegal is a person qualified by education, training or work experience who is employed or retained by a lawyer, law office, corporation, governmental agency or other entity who performs specifically delegated substantive legal work for which a lawyer is responsible."  Under this definition, the legal responsibility for a paralegal's work rests directly and solely upon the lawyer.

A paralegal is very important to a lawyer as they handle the filing of cases, searching for case laws and precedents that will help the lawyer present his or her case.  Paralegals also help lawyers prepare their closing arguments, as well as help them prepare for trials, hearings and corporate meetings.

Paralegals are often also called legal assistants.  While paralegals can get by with just on the job training, it is a high demand field and paralegals with some sort of associate's paralegal degree or a bachelor's degree in something else with a paralegal certificate will almost always sure to be hired before someone with no degree or no training at all.

Paralegals can work for law firms, corporations, real estate firms and government offices.  It is a very challenging career but is also a very rewarding career when the lawyer wins the case because of the work you did for him or for her.

Don't wait around.  Start working toward your paralegal degree today so you will have a better tomorrow.
